Plaza Botero

Also known as Plazuela Nutibara or Plaza de las Esculturas, it’s located in the heart of Medellín, along Carabobo Avenue. This emblematic space shows 23 majestic bronze sculptures, a gift from renowned local artist Fernando Botero in 2002. The pieces beautify the surroundings of the Museum of Antioquia, the city’s cultural epicenter, and the Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of Culture, home of the Institute of Culture and Heritage of Antioquia.

The Palace of Culture, an architectural jewel of the area, stands out for its corridors and rooms full of history and art, the scene of significant events for the Department of Antioquia. Today, it has been transformed into a cultural complex that houses a museum, historical archives, sound libraries and libraries dedicated to local history, becoming a valuable research resource for the community. Entry to these facilities is free.

Towards the west of the square stands the Museum of Antioquia, founded in 1881. This museum has a vast collection that exceeds 5,000 pieces, from archaeological artifacts to modern art creations. The building, which served as the headquarters of the Municipality of Medellín until the late 1980s and reflects the American Art Deco style, was restored in the 1990s. Inside, an exclusive space is reserved for Botero’s paintings. Admission to the museum costs 30,000 COP.
